The doors of CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) were thrown open to familiarise the people of Mysuru and other cities to its innovations and food technologies during ‘Open Days’, a two-day event, which began here on Tuesday.
The theme of ‘Open Days’ is food safety. The entry to the institute is from the north gate, opposite to All India Radio, on K.R.S. Road. The programme is open on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
As expected, the premier institute’s initiative evoked an overwhelming response as the public, including many students from schools and colleges, queued up to the campus to get a glimpse of the achievements of the research laboratory as well as the research and development (R& D) activities of all its departments.

Police Commissioner B. Dayanand inaugurated the Open Day in the presence CFTRI Director Ram Rajashekaran.
He later went around the stalls put up by over 18 departments opposite the main building of CFTRI (Cheluvamba Mansion).
The stall of biochemistry and nutrition, flour milling, baking and confectionary technology, food packing technology, fruit and vegetable technology, grain science and technology, microbiology and fermentation technology, meat and marine sciences, molecular nutrition, spice and flavour sciences, traditional foods and sensory science and other departments had scientists, research scholars and students interacting with the visitors.

At the assembly hall of the institute building, there was a brief video, a tech talk and mime on food safety for 15 minutes, for the benefit of students.
Demonstrations of novel machines and processes developed by the institute too have been exhibited.
There were live demonstrations of the making of dosa, ladoo and other products using machines.
The last such event had been organised in September 2013. On Wednesday, A .K. Srivastava, director, ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, Haryana, will speak at the CSIR-CFTRI Foundation Day-2015 at the IFTTC Auditorium at 9.15 am.
