Experts highlight value of intellectual property

MSME-CII-IPFC, Mysuru, in association with SJCE-STEP and JSSCMS organised World Intellectual Property Day celebrations with the theme ‘IP as a fuel for Start-ups and MSMEs’ here at SJCE on Tuesday.

The session was organised on the occasion of the centenary celebrations of Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswami.

P. Nagesh, HoD, JSSCMS, SJCE, welcomed the speakers to the session and explained the importance of intellectual property.

The audience were later introduced to the concept of celebrating ‘World IP Day’ and the organisers explained that it is celebrated on April 26 as the convention establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) came into force in 1970 on this day.

Gaurav Singhal, director and principle attorney, Patracode Services Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru, spoke about the different types of IPs and then shared his views as to the right time of protection for each type of IP. Ashutosh Pathak, lead IP analyst, Momentive Performance Materials (India) Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru, spoke about creating value from IP and said, “IP takes centre stage in today’s world.”

A release said that Mr. Pathak also informed the participants that the companies are choosing to cross-license their know-how and technology to develop their services and products.

Nagendra Setty, managing director, Ideas Manufacturing, Mysuru, spoke about the “reality check” on IP filings and said that it is key for big corporates and for small or start-up companies, it is the viability and the timing of the technology that is more important.

K.S. Sudheer, associate solicitor, Legal Consultants, spoke on IP monetisation and cited the example of using the KSRTC trademark.

After sending notices to unauthorised ticket websites, the sale of KSRTC tickets increased dramatically.

Participants sought clarification on the use of open source software and its ownership. The panel jointly answered the query by replying that the software is open for use by everybody and that the owner will levy charges only on services provided rather than design, the release added.
