IISc. selects Anurag Kumar as new director

The council of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.) on Saturday selected, as its 20th director, Anurag Kumar, who is now the Chairman of the Electrical Sciences Division at the institute. IISc.’s present director, P. Balaram, retires on July 31 after an eight-year tenure.

An electrical engineer with a 26-year-old association with the IISc., Prof. Kumar graduated in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur, in 1977 and did his Ph.D. at Cornell University, the U.S., in 1981.

He worked for six years in New Jersey, at the AT&T Bell Labs, where he looked at the performance analysis of computer systems, communication networks and manufacturing systems. In 1988, he joined the IISc.’s Electrical Communication Engineering department as Assistant Professor.

The final approval of his appointment will have to be made by President of India and the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Prof. Kumar told

The Hindu .

“It is an honour to be selected, and a huge responsibility that comes to me, which I hope to execute with everyone’s support,” he said.

Prof. Balaram, who has had an eventful tenure as IISc. director said he hoped to “head home [to Malleswaram] to lead a quiet life”.
