IMA doctors strike LIVE: Healthcare services affected as doctors hold nationwide strike seeking justice for Kolkata medic

Under the banner of Junior Doctors Association, the students and junior doctors have assembled for the protest. They carry posters with slogans condemning the incident in Kolkata and demanding safety for women.

The ‘unnatural’ death of the second-year woman postgraduate medical student in R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, in Kolkata, on August 9, 2024 triggered massive outrage.

The incident has invoked fear among students and doctors with post-graduate trainees questioning the safety and security on the hospital premises and alleging the lack of a separate room for women doctors who work at night.

Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) began a 24-hour withdrawal of health services by all doctors of modern medicine across the country, irrespective of the sector and place of work. The withdrawal of services is from 6 a.m. on Saturday (August 17, 2024) to 6 a.m. on Sunday (August 18, 2024), impacting outpatient services and elective surgeries.
