With the installation of LED lights in the railway stations, offices, and residential quarters in Raichur and Yadgir, which come under Guntakal division, South Central Railway (SCR) zone has become the first 100% LED-lit zone in the country. The milestone was achieved on June 20 this year.
Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had set June 30 as the deadline to implement this project in order to save electricity and reduce carbon emission by using LED bulbs instead of conventional ones in all railway stations in the country. Following the direction, officials of SCR took action and completed the project well before the deadline.
There are six divisions under SCR — Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Guntur, Vijayawada, Guntkal, and Nanded — covering all of Telangana, major parts of Andhra Pradesh, parts of Karnataka and Maharashtra, and small stretches of Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
Umashankar Kumar, Chief Public Relations Officer of SCR, said it was a proud moment for all the officials, staff and electrical department of SCR who contributed immensely to achieve this goal.
Shakeel Ahmed, Senior PRO, said that 1,35,417 LED luminaries were installed in all the 733 railway stations and 1,424 service buildings under SCR by the end of March — also a first among all the zones. The commissioning of LED lighting at all the residential quarters in the zone has contributed to making the zone 100% LED-lit now, he said.
Saving energy
The cumulative impact of total LED lighting on SCR is electrical energy savings of 82 lakh units, amounting to ₹7 crore per annum for the zone. The carbon emission impact will be cumulatively reduced by 7,372 tonnes a year, and this will be a sizeable contribution to a greener environment, he said.
Mr. Kumar also said that the 100% mark was achieved by providing 1,64,291 LED luminaries, replacing conventional bulbs in 23,740 railway residential quarters in the zone. This is expected to result electrical energy savings of in 35.4 lakh units, amounting to ₹3 crore a year, apart from reduction in carbon emission by 3,187 tonnes.
