R. Lingappa of the Janata Dal (Secular) and Mahadevamma of the Bharatiya Janata Party were elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor, respectively, on Thursday.

Mr. Lingappa secured 40 votes to defeat his opponent R. Ananth (Congress) who bagged 27 votes, while Ms. Mahadevamma secured 39 votes to defeat Sameena (Congress) who got 27 votes.

Independent councillor Shivamma opted to remain neutral in the Deputy Mayor elections and hence Ms. Mahadevamma got a vote less.

The new Mayor and Deputy Mayor will hold the posts till October 08, 2015.

Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Lingappa said his priority was to provide potable water to Mysore city on a daily basis.

He said he would lay stress on clearing garbage every day and improve the drainage system here.

On whether he was confident of getting the Congress government’s support in the State, he said he would try to have a diplomatic relationship to make Mysore a clean city.
