Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who has been criticised for doing little to stop sexual assaults on women in the State, on Tuesday remained defiant about his government’s action when reporters asked him about the investigation into the rape of a six-year-old in a city school.

Mr. Siddaramaiah shot back at reporters saying, “Is this the only news you have?” He said the government had acted swiftly and arrested the suspect in the case, Mustafa alias Munna, skating instructor working at the private school in Marathahalli..

“We will take whatever action is required... wherever we can invoke the Goonda Act, we will do that,” he said. The government would soon bring in amendments to the Goonda Act to widen its scope and book cases against all those involved in rape and sexual assault cases, he added.

The Chief Minister hit out at the Opposition, Bharatiya Janata Party, for highlighting rape cases for political gains.

In a debate on the issue in the Legislative Assembly on Monday, Opposition BJP and Janata Dal (S) had criticised the government for its “failure” to ensure women’s safety.
