Kerala floods: Before and after images from NASA show level of inundation

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on Sunday released an interactive graphic which shows the extent of flooding in parts of Kerala.

The graphic contains two satellite images of the area surrounding the Vembanad lake, including areas in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Changanassery and Thiruvalla.

The first image, taken on February 6 by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 satellite, captures the area before the flooding. The second image, taken on August 22 by the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-2 satellite, shows the level of inundation in those areas following intense rainfall.

The water levels – indicated by the dark blue colour – can be seen completely covering the dry grass land in the second image.
