KSU to launch stir against fee hike

Plans audit in self-financing colleges to assess the cost of educating a student

Kerala Students Union (KSU) State president K.M. Abhijith has called for an auditing in self-financing colleges to assess the cost incurred on educating a student.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr. Abhijith said the KSU would conduct such an auditing and pass on the findings to the government. The government was colluding with the anti-student measures of the managements.

The KSU would launch a stir against this starting with waving of black flag at Minister for Health K.K. Shylaja. A protest march would be taken out to the residence of the Minister on July 3 as part of this.

The government had hiked the fee in self-financing medical colleges from ₹2.50 lakh to ₹5.50 lakh. This amounted to cheating students who qualified through the National Eligibility-Cum-Entrance Test (NEET).

If necessary, the court would be approached against the government’s decision to hike the fee. If someone approached the court, the KSU would implead in the case and extend all assistance.

The Left Democratic Front was maintaining an indifferent arrogance in the face of protests against its anti-people policies, Mr. Abhijith said.

The KSU would not allow admissions to take place if the government declined to roll back the fee hike. A slew of measures, including organising protest marches to colleges, would be considered. Mr. Abhijith demanded that the government come clean on why it hiked the fee without any proportion even after the fee regulatory commission found that the expenses submitted by the managements were inflated.
