The Kerala State Road Project (KSTP) steering committee chaired by Chief Secretary K.M. Abraham has decided to construct a flyover at the northern end of the Thiruvalla bypass that links the Thiruvalla-Mallappally Road with the MC Road at Ramanchira, according to local MLA and Water Resources Minister Mathew T. Thomas.
In a statement here on Thursday, Mr. Thomas said the proposed 220-metre-long flyover would incur an additional expenditure to the tune of ₹37.5 crore.
Clearance
The KSTP steering committee has decided to retender the work after obtaining necessary clearance from the World Bank that has been funding the MC Road development project.
He said the KSTP had to change the design of the bypass along its northern end portion owing to certain technical flaws in the earlier plan. Previously, the decision was to earthfill the bypass portion near Ramanchira by 12 metres. However, experts found that raising the road to such a height, with out constructing protection wall on either side, would pose technical problems in its construction.
The work on the ₹33-crore bypass project was formally launched by the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, in December, 2014, for completing it by October, 2016. However, the project had got into certain legal wrangles with a local resident moving the National Green Tribunal against it.
The Minister said the land acquisition procedures for the bypass project would also be completed soon.
