The Opposition party Rashtriya Janata Dal raised the issue of Muzaffarpur shelter home rape case in the State Assembly and alleged that the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government was “protecting” the main accused Brajesh Thakur.

“The Nitish Kumar-led government has been protecting the main accused Brajesh Thakur in the Muzaffarpur shelter home rape case of girls, as he is politically close to him,” alleged Leader of the Opposition Tejaswi Yadav.

His party leaders too supported him and demanded CBI inquiry into the case. Brajesh Thakur was the owner of the NGO which was running the affairs of the state-run shelter home in Muzaffarpur in which 44 girls, all aged between 7-18 years were living. The rape of at least 16 girls have been confirmed in medical test done at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH).

“Other girls report of medical test are awaited,” said Muzaffarpur Senior Superintendent of police Harpreet Kaur. Mr. Thakur was arrested within 48-hours after the sexual plight of the girls was exposed. A police complaint was lodged by the state social welfare department. Altogether 10 persons, including seven women, have been arrested and sent to jail.

Responding to Tejaswi Yadav’s allegations, Deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi told the Speaker that his government “neither protects anyone, nor implicate.”

“My government would recommend for speedy trial in the case…people have been arrested in the case and sent to jail and we would also recommend for probe into the affairs of all shelter homes and short stay homes in the state,” said Sushil Modi.

Mr Modi also raised the issue of RJD MLA Raj Ballabh Yadav who was earlier arrested and sent to jail in connection with a rape case of a minor girl of Nalanda district.

“What about Raj Ballabh Yadav?...why he had gone to meet RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav when he was absconding in the rape case?” asked Sushil Modi.

Amid pandemonium the assembly Speaker Vijay Choudhury adjourned the House till lunch.
