A 28-member Parliamentary Standing Committee (PSC) on Home Affairs was briefed by top Jammu & Kashmir officials on the changing developmental landscape in the Union Territory on Thursday.
J&K Chief Secretary Dr. Arun Kumar Mehta apprised the PSC, headed by Congress leader and MP Anand Sharma, about “developmental scenarios and people’s welfare measures implemented in the Union Territory”.
The Committee, comprising 28 MPs from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, was provided with a detailed presentation on decentralisation, and District Development Council and Block Development Council polls, which “strengthened the grassroot-level democracy in the Union Territory”, officials said.
Top J&K officials also shared details on initiatives by the Lieutenant-Governor’s administration, including the “Back to Village”, “Jan Abhiyan” and “My Town My Pride” schemes.
On power and water supply, the official said power generation projects had been fast-paced, 2,500 MW supply would be added by 2025, and 100% piped water was supplied to all rural schools and Anganwadi centres in 18 districts of the Union Territory.
Resettlement of Kashmiri migrants, who had left the valley in the face of growing militancy in the 1990s, was also discussed.
The committee held a series of meetings with local bodies, too, and with self help groups, representatives of farmer producer organisations, apple growers, saffron producers, etc.
