In the backdrop of the Kolkata doctor rape and murder case, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (August 15, 2024) said crimes against women should be probed swiftly, and stringent punishment given to those who commit such acts.

Asserting that the States, society, and the nation have to take serious cognisance of such incidents, Mr. Modi in his 78th Independence Day address said that the outrage among citizens was visible. “I can feel this outrage,” he said.

“Crimes against women should be investigated without any delay. Those committing such demonic acts must be booked prima facie to reinstate the trust in the government, judiciary, and civil society”.

He said that while rape victims are highlighted all over the media and discussed in society, the rapist does not make the news. “Now the need of the hour is that there should be a wide discussion about the criminals who get punished so that even those who commit such sins fear the consequences including hanging to death. I feel that it is very important to create this fear”, the Prime Minister said.

The alleged rape and murder of an on-duty trainee doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata last week has led to widespread protests across the country.

Taking note of the success of the women’s self-help groups, the Prime Minister said: “In the past decade, 10 crore sisters have become a part of these women self-help groups. When women become financially independent, they start contributing in important decision making in their families. They become guarantors and custodians of social transformation...Until now, a total of nine lakh crore funds have been channeled via banks to these self-help groups which is enabling them to further their various works”.

He also spoke about the extension of paid maternity leave from 12 weeks to 26 weeks and this change reflects a compassionate and constitutional approach to supporting working mothers and their children.

Making strides

Highlighting the government’s efforts in promoting a “women-led development model” across various sectors, Mr.Modi said: “Whether it’s innovation, employment, or entrepreneurship, women are making strides in every sector. Women are not just increasing their participation; they are leading”.
