A total of 383 units of toilets have been constructed in various schools under the Swachh Vidyalaya Scheme in the district in the recent past.
Swachh Vidyalaya is the national campaign for clean schools. The key feature of the campaign is to ensure that every school has a set of functioning and well maintained water sanitation and hygiene facilities.
The technical components include drinking water, hand washing, toilet and soap facilities in the school premises for use by children and teachers.
The Swachh Vidyalaya introduced in the country during the Teachers Day celebrations last year. It was decided to construct 383 unit of toilets in the schools in the district last year. Of this 300 were in the boys schools and 60 in girls schools. It was also decided to renovate eight unit of toilets in boys schools and 15 units in girls schools.
The Rural Development Department and the Sarva Siksha Abiyan jointly constructed 288 unit toilets. The rest of the toilets were constructed with the active participation of the public sector undertakings such as SAIL Salem Steel Plant, Airports Authority of India, Neyveli Lignite Corporation.
The construction work of all these toilets has already been completed.
Following this, Varghese Yohanan, Under Secretary, Swachh Vidyalaya, Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, inspected the completed projects on Wednesday.
