Power generation at the first 1000 MWe reactor of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) commenced on Saturday after seven months. The generation began at 7.12 a.m. and the unit was synchronised with the southern grid. Three-hundred megawatts of power was generated and the level was maintained till 5.30 p.m., Site Director, R.S. Sundar told The Hindu .
Generation was suspended for scheduled mandatory checks to be carried out in the turbine section of unit I after 5.30 p.m. and it would resume in a day or two, he added. This unit attained criticality at 4.19 p.m. on January 21.
Russian award
He felt happy over the announcement of ‘Order of Friendship’ award from the Russian Federation. “It is a recognition for the whole team. The whole team includes scientists and technocrats of India and Russia. We have been working with Russia on this nuclear power project for a long time and credit should go to Russian scientists as well,” Mr. Sundar said.
