With water emerging as a key topic of discussion at the Global Investors Meet on Thursday, the State government is planning to initiate additional measures to transform water scarcity into water security.

Industries in Chennai and its outskirts are expected to gain significantly from such initiatives. Participants from various countries even spoke about the demand for water in most of the projects.

Minister for Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MAWS) S.P. Velumani said the government “intends to move from water scarcity to water security in a sustainable manner.”

“Proposals have been prepared at an estimated cost of Rs.1,430 crore for Chennai. In other parts of the State, Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) board has prepared 636 proposals at a cost of Rs.20,820 crore,” Mr. Velumani said.

TWAD board has done a detailed investigation for development of a water grid along the Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor after studying 10,881 industries in 46 clusters, preparing a pre-feasibility report on water supply, desalination and water treatment at an estimated cost of Rs.13,625 crore.

Ponneri and Hosur are expected to be the key nodes for water supply for industries along the industrial corridor.

Reiterating the policy of supplying 10 per cent of the water to industry, MAWS Secretary K. Phanindra Reddy said 704 MLD would be supplied for industry. Mr. Reddy assured delegates that infrastructure facilities for supplying treated sewage for industries would be in place.
