A day after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi, Governor Banwarilal Purohit held a 30-minute-long discussion with Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on the prevailing situation in Tamil Nadu against the backdrop of the Cauvery protests.
Mr. Palaniswami’s senior cabinet colleagues, Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam and Fisheries Minister D. Jayakumar, accompanied him during the meeting at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday. Emerging from the meeting, the Chief Minister told reporters that he apprised Mr. Purohit of the situation in the State and responded to the Governor’s queries. “We have given him a satisfactory reply,” Mr. Palaniswami emphasised.

It was “not uncommon” for a Governor to ask information from a Chief Minister when the State was witnessing protests. “This is what has happened here. It is a routine meeting,” the Minister said. Mr. Jayakumar said the State government had ensured that law and order was “being maintained properly.”
Asked to comment on the development, DMK senior leader and Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Durai Murugan said he would prefer to wait for a few days, so clarity emerges on Wednesday’s meeting.
On Tuesday, the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam organised hunger strike all over the State. The Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister, in their speeches, turned their ire only towards the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Congress, even though the party release, at the time of issuing a release on the hunger strike, stated that the agitation was meant for condemning the Central government for not having formed the Cauvery Management Board (CMB).
