The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), a constituent of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA), has convened a meeting of its high-level executive committee on March 20 to discuss India's stand on the US-sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council.
A release issued by DMK general secretary K. Anbazhagan on Saturday announced the party's decision to convene the meeting to discuss the issue.
The Union government has been maintaining that India is against country-specific resolutions, even as DMK president M. Karunanidhi has already made it clear that India's failure to support the resolution would be deemed as a betrayal of Tamils.
On Wednesday, before leaving for election campaign in Sankarankoil, Mr. Karunanidhi, responding to a specific question, had said that the DMK's executive committee would decide on the question of withdrawal of support to the UPA government at the Centre if India failed to support the resolution against Sri Lanka.
“I alone cannot take a decision. The party's high-level executive committee will discuss and arrive at a decision,” he had said.
