Members of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) were evicted en masse from the Assembly on Thursday following heated arguments over remarks made by an AIADMK MLA.

Deputy Leader of the DMK in the Assembly Durai Murugan objected to certain remarks made by R. Rajalakshmi during a debate on the demand for grants for Higher Education and School Education Departments, and wanted them expunged.

This led to an argument between DMK and the AIADMK members. As his requests not to disrupt the proceedings went unheeded, Speaker P. Dhanapal ordered the eviction of DMK members.

Earlier, members of the DMK, the DMDK and the Communist parties staged a walkout claiming that several adjournment and calling attention motions on an array of issues were not being taken up. DMK Treasurer M.K. Stalin told reporters outside the Assembly that his party wanted discussion on price rise, drought situation and other pressing issues. The Speaker, however, continued to say that reply from departments concerned on the notices of the members was yet to be received, he alleged.
