Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Tuesday visited the Thoothukudi Government Hospital to enquire about the treatment being provided to those who were injured in the police firing during an anti-Sterlite rally last week.
Mr. Purohit, who flew to the port town from Chennai, visited the family members of the injured and listened to the grievances of the public, flanked by a large posse of police and revenue officials. While interacting with the injured, Mr. Purohit enquired about the medical treatment being provided to them and appealed to the doctors to provide quality treatment and special attention to the victims for their speedy recovery.
He met the family of P. Selvasekar, 52, who was killed in the police firing, at their residence in Iruvappapuram near Sawyerpuram. He spent some time with the bereaved family and gave an assurance that all possible assistance would be provided to Masaanam, the mother of the deceased, and his two sisters, Santha and Seetha.
Meets kin
Later, the Governor met the kin of two other victims — J. Antony Selvaraj, 42, of Annai Velankanni Nagar, and S. Maniraj, 34, of Damodaran Nagar, and consoled the grieving family members.
Additional Chief Secretary to the Governor R. Rajagopal, Additional Chief Secretary (Transport) P.W.C. Davidar, Thoothukudi Collector Sandeep Nanduri and Superintendent of Police Murali Rambha received the Governor at the airport.
The Governor also enquired with the Collector about the damage caused during the violence and the prevailing law and order situation in Thoothukudi. Later, he boarded a Chennai-bound flight at 3 p.m.
Corporation Commissioner Alby John Varghese, District Revenue Officer M. Veerappan, Thoothukudi Sub-Collector Prashanth and Thoothukudi Medical College dean Lalitha accompanied the Governor during his visit.
