A new regional political party in the name of Tamil Nadu Makkal Congress has bee'n formed by Congressmen owing allegiance to Mr. G. K. Moopanar. The party is in the process of being registered so as to secure a common symbol.
In another development, the State Law Minister, Mr. K. A. Krishnasami has submitted his resignation from the Cabinet protesting the failure of the AIADMK to renominate him to contest the coming elections.
For the AIADMK, the party supremo, Ms. Jayalalitha will launch the campaign at Villupuram on April 3, after filing her nomination for Bargur constituency the same day. The DMK president, Mr. M. Karunanidhi launched the campaign of his party at a public meeting at Chepauk (from where he is to contest the Assembly elections) on Sunday night when he also released the first list of candidates.
Those at the TNCC(I) headquarters are still awaiting the PCC president's word from Delhi regarding the selection of candidates for both the Assembly and the Lok Sabha constituencies. They expect the list to be available tomorrow.
For the third day today there was hectic activity at the residence of Mr. Moopanar as the names of the candidates are being finalised. The Union Ministers, Mr. P. Chidambaram and Mr. M. Arunachalam who arrived here from Delhi this morning also took part in the exercise.
The third front, with the MDMK and the CPI (M) as major partners, is continuing its efforts to strengthen the front and had offered to accommodate the Indira Congress 'to the maximum extent'. A spokesman of the MDMK indicated that the seat-sharing exercise with the Janata Dal is likely to be concluded successfully tomorrow.
