Prof. S. Subbiah, Vice-Chancellor of Alagappa University has said lack of soft skills was a key reason for unemployability and advised research scholars to develop employability skills.
Addressing the inaugural function of the three-day ‘Soft Skills Communicative Training Programme to the Research Scholars,’ organised by the Alagappa Institute of Skill Development here on Thursday, he exhorted the research scholars to enhance their communication skills, build confidence and employability skills.
With industries and service sectors looking for employees with good communication skills, team work and collaboration, research scholars should equip themselves to meet the demand. When teachers lacked these basic soft skills, it would hurt the overall success of the institution, he said.

Prof Subbiah further said “every year we are producing six lakh engineering graduates but only 18.43 per cent are ready to be deployed as software engineers in the IT services industry.”
As per the report of Aspiring Minds, among the five-lakh technical engineers who graduated in 2015, only 17.45 per cent were fit for employment.
The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) survey has said Indian IT firms rejected 90 per cent of college graduates and 75 per cent of engineers who applied for jobs because they were found lacking in thinking, presentation, negotiation and time management skills. A. Narayanamoorthy, Syndicate Member of the university, in his inaugural address, stressed that communication skills were important for research scholars to deliver their research work effectively.

Speaking on the occasion, Kalpana Chowdary Lagadapti, CEO, Infitech, said that there was less number of research scholars in India compared to other developed countries and suggested that there could be enhanced investments in the field of Research and Development in India.
