The engine and three coaches of Erode-bound Yercaud Express derailed while entering the Arakkonam junction late on Sunday night. However, no one sustained injuries.
The train entered platform number 1 around 11.50 pm when the derailment took place, affecting other trains at the junction. Since the train was about to stop, it came in slowly.
The engine and the coaches went off the track, but stopped short of turning over.
On Monday morning, normalcy was restored and the train resumed its journey.
As the first three platforms were affected, the authorities let trains into platforms 4 and 5.
The derailment resulted in delay in arrival of trains in Chennai. Track repair work was completed in the evening and traffic resumed by 6 pm, sources said. State Higher Education Minister K.P.Anbalagan had travelled by the train, but his coach was not among the ones that were affected. The Minister continued his journey by car, sources said.
