Achievements aplenty for IIT-H in 2018; aiming higher in the new year

The Indian Institute of Technology-Hyderabad (IIT-H) has witnessed another year of growth and exemplary achievements. 2018 has once again proved that the institute is at the forefront of academia, research and development, industry collaboration, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Among the key highlights of the year was the participation of President of India Ram Nath Kovind for the 7th convocation as chief guest.

Speaking about the institute’s achievements in 2018 and plans for the next year, director U.B. Desai said: “IIT-H made great strides in 2018 and looks forward to even stronger growth in 2019. The main thrust will be on artificial intelligence, 5G, cyber physical systems, batteries and other cutting-edge areas. Some exciting plans will be revealed as the new year progresses. Research and academic innovations will always be at the forefront.”

Researchers are developing a smartphone-based sensor to detect adulteration in milk. As the first step, they have developed a detector to measure the acidity of milk through the design of an indicator paper that changes colour according to the acidity. They have also developed algorithms that can be incorporated on to a mobile phone to accurately detect the colour change.

Entrepreneurs’ success

Startups incubated at IIT-H have developed healthcare technologies to save the lives of babies and help bed-bound individuals. HEAMAC Healthcare Pvt. Ltd,which aims to solve unidentified pressing needs in neonatal and maternal care, has developed a product to help infants suffering from physiological jaundice. Kvayat Medical developed a product on faecal management system to assist bed-bound individuals and is enabling them to lead a life with dignity.

Pratyusha Pareddy, co-founder and CEO of NemoCare, was awarded with TiE-BIRAC Award for Women in Entrepreneurial Research.

Two professors were chosen for NASI-Young Scientist Platinum Jubilee Awards (2018) by the National Academy of Sciences. Sushmee Badhulika of the department of Electrical Engineering was chosen in recognition of her excellence in category of ‘Electronics, Computer Science and Engineering’. Dr. Aravind Kumar Rengan, department of Biomedical Engineering, was chosen in bio-medical, molecular biology and bio-technology category.
