he city police resumed its late night drive ‘Chabutra Mission’ and “Road RomeoY’s” and early on Tuesday rounded up 150 youngsters including 65 students.

“The youth including students were aimlessly moving about on motorcycles or occupying colony roads and creating nuisance. Our teams in civilian clothes caught them and detained them,” DCP (south zone) V Satyanarayana said. Around 3,000 youngsters were caught by the police in south and western areas of the city over the last few months during the late night operations. According to the police, the drive was taken up following a few instances of physical offences like stabbing and group clashes over petty issues involving educated youth. “Parents who are staying in Middle East and other foreign countries called us and asked us to resume the Chabutra Mission. The youth lie to their grandparents or mother and move around on city roads late in the night and there are high chances of these youth getting attracted to bad habits,” the official explained.

Parents or guardians of the youth who are caught are called for a counselling session where religious leaders and community elders counsel them. Later, they are let off with a warning. “Before detaining the youth, we are verifying their claims. Some try to escape by saying they are going to hospital or funeral but if it is genuine we release them,” Mr. Satyanarayana said.

The police plan to continue the drive for the next few months till the completion of public examination for SSC, Intermediate and Graduation as part of its community policing.
