Questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence over the Thoothukudi police firing that killed 11 people for protesting against a copper plant, the Congress on Thursday asked the Prime Minister to spell out if the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu was “fit to be dismissed.”
Senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi told reporters at a press briefing that the, “Tamil Nadu government has forfeited the political, moral, ethical right to rule” and demanded an immediate apology for police brutality.
Playing on the viral ‘fitness challenge’ on social media, Mr. Singhvi said, “This is another kind of fitness challenge...thrown to the Prime Minister. Does he think the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu is fit to be dismissed?”
Posing a series of questions, the Congress alleged that the Modi government in December 2014 had done away with the process of public consultation before granting environmental clearances to projects such as the one in Thoothukudi.
Mr. Singhvi also said the State government should find out which government officials had allowed the project in Tamil Nadu after it was moved out of Maharashtra owing to public protests in 1994.
