Uttar Pradesh bypolls: BSP declares candidates for eight Assembly seats

In candidate selection, the party seems to have focused on Upper Castes and Other Backward Classes

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on Thursday (October 24, 2024) announced candidates for byelections to eight Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh to be held on November 13. The candidate for Khair seat has not been announced yet.

The party has fielded Amit Verma from Katehari Assembly seat in Ambedkar Nagar district; Virendra Kumar Shukla from Sisamau seat in Kanpur; Jitendra Kumar Singh from Phulpur in Prayagraj; Shahnazar from Mirapur in Muzaffarnagar; Avnish Kumar Shakya from Karhal in Mainpuri; Rafatullah alias Neta Chhidda from Kundarki in Moradabad; and Parmanand Garm and Deepak Tiwari from Ghaziabad and Manjhwa seats respectively, in Mirzapur district.

In candidate selection, the party seems to have focused on Brahmin and Other Backward Classes (OBCs). Two candidates hail from the Brahmin community and four belong to the OBCs. The party led by former four-time U.P. CM Mayawati had said it will go solo in the byelections.
