The torch for the 18th Asian Games was welcomed to the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta on Tuesday, with a military parade, traditional dancing and a flypast by the airforce. Jakarta and Palembang in Sumatra are set to host about 11,000 athletes and 5,000 officials from 45 Asian countries for the August 18 to September 2 Games, the world's biggest multi-sport event behind the Olympics. The flame, which was lit on Sunday in New Delhi -- the host city of Asia's first Asian Games in 1951 -- arrived on an Indonesian Air Force Boeing jet that was escorted by five fighters in golden eagle formation.

The European Union and Japan are signing a widespread trade deal on July 17 that will eliminate nearly all tariffs, seemingly defying the worries about trade tensions set off by President Donald Trump’s policies. The signing in Tokyo for the deal, largely reached late last year, is ceremonial. It was delayed from earlier this month because Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe canceled going to Brussels over a disaster in southwestern Japan, caused by extremely heavy rainfall. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has blasted local officials over a delayed construction project, state media reported Tuesday, his second such rebuke over the economy in recent weeks. It’s unusual for state media to carry dispatches showing Kim’s criticism of officials. Experts say Kim may be struggling to improve his country’s moribund economy and intends to pass the responsibility for its economic woes on to officials before possibly launching new economic policies. The latest fury, as Kim negotiates with the United States over abandoning his nuclear weapons programs, came during a visit to the power plant’s construction site in the northeast. After officials briefed him about the project and its delays, he was “speechless” and “extremely enraged,” the Korean Central News Agency reported. - AP

School shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz sits in a Broward County courtroom for a hearing in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

School shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz sits in a Broward County courtroom for a hearing in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The state commission investigating the Florida high school massacre is learning about what happened before, during and after the shooting, but perhaps even more importantly what didn’t happen. Suspect Nikolas Cruz had an extensive school disciplinary and mental health record and may have received much leniency, but his diversion into a Broward County schools program for problem students didn’t make it possible for him to buy a gun. The hearing is to determine how much of Cruz's statement to investigators should be be made public. Cruz faces the death penalty if convicted of killing 17 people in the Valentine's Day attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
