Stabbing in Melbourne

A knife-wielding man killed one person and injured two others in a rush hour stabbing rampage in downtown Melbourne on November 9, before being shot dead by police.

Australian authorities said they were treating the attack as an act of terror and revealed that the suspect was originally from Somalia and was known to intelligence agencies.

Counter-terrorism police and intelligence officers are still piecing together how the incident occurred, but it is known the attacker drove a 4x4 truck loaded with gas bottles into the bustling city centre at around 10.30 a.m. IST.

Defence minister inducts 3 artillery gun systems

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inducted three major artillery gun systems, including the M777 American Ultra Light Howitzers and the K-9 Vajra, into the Army.

The third gun system inducted is the ‘Composite Gun Towing Vehicle’ for towing some of the existing guns in service with the country, while K-9 Vajra is a self-propelled artillery gun.

The induction ceremony at Deolali, in Maharashtra comes ahead of establishing the first regiment — each comprising of about 18 guns — of the M777s and the Vajra by around mid next year, an official said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Friday voiced hope that a conference on Afghanistan taking place in Moscow could help pave the way for peace talks.

“The Moscow format of talks is aimed at establishing an inclusive inter-Afghan dialogue in the interests of advancing the process of national reconciliation,” Lavrov said as he opened the meeting that has brought together representatives of the Afghan authorities and the Taliban.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and decided to bowl first in the second one-day international against Australia under ideal weather conditions at the Adelaide Oval.

The Proteas skipper said he was uncertain whether it was the best choice to bowl or bat first, and hoped he would have lost the toss.  For Australia, Shaun Marsh came in for D'Arcy Short and Adam Zampa replaced Nathan Coulter-Nile.

Cambodians on Friday, marked the country's 65th Independence anniversary from France in capital Phnom Penh.

Cambodia was under French rule for almost a century before its 1953 independence. Late King Norodom Sihanouk declared Cambodia’s independence from France in 1953 after seizing power a year earlier in a bloodless coup, but maintained good relations with the European nation.

More than 2,000 mourners gathered at a local performing arts center in Thousand Oaks, for a candlelight vigil on behalf of the victims, who died  after a shooting inside a crowded Southern California bar late on Wednesday.
